Let’s Talk Genetics…
Below, you’ll find an easy-to-understand explanation of each health test and why responsible genetic screening is an important part of our breeding program.
-
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
PRA is an inherited eye condition that can gradually affect vision later in life. Dogs with certain genetic combinations may experience reduced eyesight over time. Through genetic testing, we can identify carriers and carefully plan pairings so that no puppies are born affected by this condition.
-
Hyperuricosuria (HU)
Hyperuricosuria is a genetic condition that affects how a dog processes uric acid. In some cases, it can increase the risk of developing bladder stones. Genetic testing allows responsible breeders to avoid producing affected puppies by pairing dogs appropriately.
-
Canine Factor VII Deficiency (CFVII)
Factor VII Deficiency is a mild inherited blood clotting disorder. Most dogs with this condition live normal lives, but they may bleed longer than usual after surgery or injury. With genetic testing, we can ensure puppies are not affected.
-
Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC)
MAC is a rare inherited immune-related condition seen in Miniature Schnauzers. It can make affected dogs more vulnerable to certain infections. Genetic screening allows us to prevent producing puppies affected by this condition.
-
Cardiac (Heart) Evaluation
Heart evaluations are performed to ensure our breeding dogs have healthy heart function. This helps reduce the risk of passing on congenital (present at birth) heart concerns and supports overall long-term wellness.
-
Patella Evaluation
The patella (kneecap) should sit properly in the knee joint. In some small breeds, the kneecap can shift out of place (called luxating patella). Evaluating our breeding dogs helps reduce the likelihood of this structural issue being passed to puppies.
-
Dental Health
Dental structure is important in the Miniature Schnauzer. Proper bite alignment and strong teeth support long-term oral health. Our breeding dogs are evaluated to ensure sound dental structure.
-
Eye Health
In addition to genetic screening for PRA, our breeding dogs are monitored for overall eye health to ensure clear vision and healthy eye structure.

Health testing is one part of responsible breeding. While no breeder can guarantee perfection, careful genetic screening, thoughtful pairing, and ongoing evaluation greatly reduce risk and help support strong, healthy companions.
