Feeding the Miniature Schnauzer
Why does diet matter so much?
Mother Nature knows best when it comes to feeding man’s best friend. For thousands of years, dogs thrived on natural, varied diets.
In contrast, the rise of mass-produced, highly processed foods has gone hand-in-hand with a rise in modern canine health issues such as:
-
Food intolerances and allergies
-
Skin conditions and thyroid disorders
-
Diabetes and pancreatitis
-
Skeletal development problems
-
Even some behaviour issues
It’s hard to believe that’s just a coincidence.
Is kibble really enough?
Relying solely on dried, processed food is a bit like feeding our families nothing but instant noodles and frozen dinners. It may keep us alive, but it’s hardly the recipe for a long, vibrant life. That’s why I carefully choose what I feed my dogs and I recommend you do the same. My dogs eat a variety of fruits, veggies. The moment they hear me chopping in the kitchen they are at my feet waiting for their treats!
What do I feed my Miniature Schnauzers?
I feed my dogs a Canadian-made kibble called FirstMate Pacific Ocean Fish Meal. I’ve chosen it because it’s a high quality kibble that offers benefits that are especially important for Miniature Schnauzers.
Benefits of FirstMate Pacific:
-
Single protein source (wild-caught herring, anchovy & sardines): Gentle on sensitive stomachs and ideal for dogs with food allergies.
-
Grain-friendly formula with oatmeal & brown rice: Provides steady energy and supports digestion without cheap fillers.
-
Low glycemic index: Helps maintain healthy blood sugar, which is important for a breed prone to diabetes.
-
Moderate fat content: Safer for Schnauzers, who are at risk of pancreatitis if fed overly rich foods.
-
Omega-3 fatty acids: Supports skin, coat, and joint health.
-
Made in British Columbia, Canada: Family-owned company with strict quality control.
-
Excellent safety record: FirstMate has never had a product recall.
🔄 Rotating Proteins
While FirstMate Pacific Ocean Fish Meal is my go-to, I also rotate with FirstMate Lamb and FirstMate Salmon. Rotation provides variety, lowers the chance of developing sensitivities to a single protein, and ensures a broader range of nutrients.
🐾 Beard Staining and Diet
Miniature Schnauzers are famous for their beards — but those beards can stain easily. Rust-colored staining is influenced by:
-
Protein source: Beef is the biggest culprit due to high porphyrin levels. Chicken and turkey can also contribute in some dogs, especially if they cause sensitivities. Fish and lamb are generally the least likely to stain.
-
Water quality: High iron in water can worsen staining.
-
Saliva & yeast: Constantly damp beards can encourage yeast growth, which deepens discoloration.
👉 Choosing fish- or lamb-based foods, along with filtered water and good grooming, helps keep beards cleaner and whiter.
